FreeBSD Upgrade

General

First we will connect to the FreeBSD Server via SSH.
On the Server i use the screen command to save connection timeout

Computer:~ ow$ ssh <user>@<server>
[ow@freebsd ~]$ screen

Identify your actually version

[ow@freebsd ~]$ freebsd-version -k
# 10.3-RELEASE-p7

Updating your System with latests updates before start an upgrade

[ow@freebsd ~]$ freebsd-update fetch
[ow@freebsd ~]$ freebsd-update install

Now we would download all upgrade data

[ow@freebsd ~]$ freebsd-update upgrade -r 11.0-RELEASE
#Looking up update.FreeBSD.org mirrors... 4 mirrors found.
#Fetching metadata signature for 10.3-RELEASE from update6.freebsd.org... done.#Fetching metadata index... done.
#Fetching 2 metadata patches.. done.
#Applying metadata patches... done.
#Inspecting system... done.

#The following components of FreeBSD seem to be installed:
#kernel/generic src/src world/base world/doc world/games world/lib32

Do the Upgrade now

[ow@freebsd ~]$ freebsd-update install
#Installing updates...
#Kernel updates have been installed. Please reboot and run
#"/usr/sbin/freebsd-update install" again to finish installing updates.

After upgrading the os we will restart the server

[ow@freebsd ~]$ shutdown -r now

After we have restart the System we need do an update again.

[ow@freebsd ~]$ freebsd-update install
#Installing updates...
#Completing this upgrade requires removing old shared object files.
#Please rebuild all installed 3rd party software (e.g., programs
#installed from the ports tree) and then run "/usr/sbin/freebsd-update install"
#again to finish installing updates.

And next Restart.

[ow@freebsd ~]$ shutdown -r now

After the second reboot we will check the actual release.

[ow@freebsd ~]$ freebsd-version -k
# FreeBSD 11.0-RELEASE-p15

We can see, that the upgrade was successful.
Finally we check that our repository is up to date.

[ow@freebsd ~]$ pkg upgrade

Now we are finished.
